I made a garden!

I made a garden!!! In plastic tubs!! Too bad it's going to be frosty tonight and the whole garden is going to die. That's a bit lame.

My gardening methods are very precise. I've been growing seeds inside for like a month, and only about half of the seeds I planted ended up actually sprouting. At one point the little plastic container holding the seedlings blew off the window sill when the window was left open in a thunderstorm and all the seedlings and unsprouted dirt clods fell into the sink. I have no idea which unsprouted dirt clod was which, so when I planted the seedlings, I just buried the unsprouted dirt clods in the plastic tub in the corner, in the hope that it's just taking a little longer than expected for whatever is in there to grow. I labeled the tub in the corner "habaneros and jalapenos." Might be marigolds though. Shrug. I also poured the entire seed pack of carrots in a couple of very close together rows in one tub. I love carrots. I am hoping they all grow together into a very very wide mega carrot. This is going to be the best garden ever! Here's a picture of my half-stained deck, some plastic tubs of dirt and a barbeque (grill, to you midwesterners).

Awhile ago I mentioned that I had made a light box for taking pictures that look like hats are suspended in midair and whatnot. To make it, I cut three sides and the top out of a cardboard box, taped some tracing paper over the cutouts, put a long piece of white poster board along the back and bottom and put it next to a window and a desk lamp. I think the resulting pictures are pretty good, and kitty thinks the resulting box is a fantastic place to hang out.

Therefore, I figured it would be a good idea to take some pictures of him. They make me giggle, so you have to look at them, too.

Boyfriend Socks

Is it weird that I am making myself boyfriend socks?

This was just too darn cute not to take a picture of. Kitty never ever sits on laps unless you are physically holding him there and brushing him. This is the closest he's ever come to cuddling on my lap. He was just so interested in the socks that he rested his fuzzy little head on my leg and watched (well, mostly he wanted to eat the needle whenever it came near him). It was very hard to make myself get up and come to school today because he was being so adorable.

Plus I learned how to do a figure-eight cast on. Very exciting.

I decided I am going to try to take better pictures of things, so I made a light tent kind of thing out of a cardboard box, a piece of poster board and some tracing paper. I'll take a picture of it at some point, but anyway, I tried taking a few pictures using it. I don't really have any decent lamps, so I can't really get a good picture yet, but here is the yarn I am using to make these boyfriend socks.

Also I can make hats fly. Neat.

Skiing

So I finally got back from Christmas in Oregon! On my trip I started both a Fake Isle hat and My So Called Scarf. The hat is way too big, so I think I will frog it. The scarf is going slowly, especially since it's hard to figure out how to fix mistakes, but the yarn is so darn yummy that I haven't gotten sick of it yet, which is sort of surprising! I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I will get them soon.

In the meantime, here is a picture of Mt. Jefferson from a ski trail at Timberline on Mt. Hood.

Field of Dreams

Some of my people came to visit for Labor Day weekend (yay!!) and so we went on a trip to see the place where the movie Field of Dreams was filmed. I really like this picture that I took there. It is so sterotypical midwest that it almost hurts.
Having guests also made us realize that it would probably be nice to move the guest room down to the basement, so that guests can have the whole basement area to themselves. As a bonus, this means that my craft room will be the bigger room!

I'm sick of storms

But isn't this an awesome picture Seany took?

It's beautiful, but holy cucumbers, it needs to stop raining around here!!! The weather radio has been freaking out every couple hours for the past 3 weeks. Flash floods! Severe thunderstorms! Tornadoes! Enough already! Today's rain so far is nice and steady and non-thunderstormy. It kind of feels like home, which I appreciate. Maybe I can get away with a handknit sweater today! It's probably gonna be in the 90's (ºF) today, but our lab is always cold!

In other news... I haven't done much crafting lately, unless you count interior decorating (which I kind of do!) I started a new, bright pink preemie hat at knit night on Tuesday. I am trying to make up a cable pattern, and I was trying to talk to people, and I was trying to figure out how to cable without a cable needle, so I didn't get very far. It should be cute when I finish though!

I think I am going to start taking karate again. I need some kind of structured work out and some people to hang out with, plus I totally miss karate. I would have to save Grey's Anatomy for Friday's though!!!

Almost back!!

I am flying back from vacation today. I hate flying! Not flying, exactly. I hate paying hundreds of dollars to be treated like crap by the airlines. Take off your shoes, unpack your whole bag, your plane's delayed, we can't find you a seat, we'll put you next to a chain smoking chatty cathy, etc etc. It's ridiculous. Anyway, vacation was awesome!! Here is my favorite picture from it:

I got a surprisingly good start on this green aran tote that's been floating in my head for months since I bought a hank of yarn that's a really great color. Then I had to buy a couple more hanks once I decided what to do. The cables are from the book at the library Aran Knitting by Alice Starmore. I love the way the cable snakes around up and down in addition to side-to-side, if that makes any sense. Here's what I've got so far:
If all goes according to plan, I will have a cute little messenger bag/tote with a big fold-over flap and a zipper at the top and a magnetic button at the bottom (ooh maybe not if I want to put my computer in it, I should think about that...maybe a wood toggle or something instead) and a sewn fabric lining and a nice wide, strong strap and it will be wonderful! If all goes according to plan.

No more .mac

Time for a new blog!!! Maybe I will stick with this one for awhile. It appears to be free, which is quite lovely, since I am not really interested in paying for things. Umm.... I dunno if anyone will ever read this, but I seem to be spending a great deal of time reading other people's crafty blogs lately, so I figured it is about time to start one of my own. The picture is from my trip to Ithaca, NY a few weeks ago to visit a friend. It makes me calm and happy, so I thought I'd share it.
